A few weeks ago... well moths now. My sister had an accident with her bike and broke her two arms. She's all better now, and putting her arms back to use again. The cast she received was all boring and white... nothing like my sister, so we had to do something about that. She loves music that's called "space disco". So that became my main inspiration. And my sis isn't into pink and hearts so because I'm such a great sister I did it anyway .
While I was pimping her cast. We drank some Gin & Tonics and gossiped about all sorts of things. Seven hours, five empty tubes of instant glue later, and some back pain later... the result was there.
I will share with you the utensils I used to pimp up my sister's casket into awesomeness. Give you the list of the materials I used and tell how I build up the cask.
Utensils:
Cutting Mat
Aluminum Slat
Scalpel or other sharp knife
Scissors
Tweezers
Materials:
Black Acrylic Paint
Blue Acrylic Paint
Red Acrylic Paint
White Acrylic Paint
Glow In The Dark Paint
Gold Paint
5 small bottles of Instant Glue
Varnish
Paintbrushes: 1 big and 1 small
Gloves
Felt Stars
Fake Jewels
optional: Glitter
This was my blank canvas. Well somewhat because I forgot to take a picture beforehand. I just laid my hand on the first strips of mirror glass. If you want to pimp your cast I would first do the painting before sticking on stuff. But I didn't really had a plan and just rolled with it.
How to:
Paint the upper and hand part with the Black as a base. If it isn't opaque enough give it another coat. Also when you paint use the big brush in circular motions to cover every spot on the textured cask.
For the star effect on the arm part I mixed the Red, Blue and some White Paint in different combinations to get the effect of a nebula or something else in the galaxy. I got a deep purple, a nice pink and a lit up blue. You can dot this with a tiny brush on the black or splash it on. But if you do be sure to cover the area where your working.
Top the star part off with a lot of White dots. If you use a dark base color you better use two coats to make sure the white really pops. Top it off with two coats of Glow in the dark Paint. This is a work where you need some patience, actually a lot of it.
Once everything's painted, seal the paint in with a nice coat of Varnish. This ensures you to clean off the painted parts is necessary. Because in my family that is necessary. Yes sis, I'm talking about you... And If you want to take a shower the water won't ruin all of your hard work.
Cut the sheets of mirrored glass in strips with the Aluminum Slat on the Cutting mat. You stick them on the cask with Instant Glue. But I would recommend you put on some Gloves if you don't want to stick your fingers to each other. Push them nice and clean together so you get a nice effect. You do need to measure them up around the arm because every piece is different lengthwise.
Now it's the easy part. Glueing on the Jewels, Stars and optional Glitter. You can do this again with the instant glue. For the smaller Jewels I used tweezers. Just to make sure my fingers didn't stick to the cask.
And that's it... Only seven hours later you can enjoy your gorgeous work. One more tip if you go to bed where a sleeve over the arm for protecting the mirrored glass and Jewels.
I really loved doing this project. For one part because It was kind of spring of the moment, and on the other part I had a great tome catching up with my sister. So thank big sis for being my latest subject on my blog.
Ok I went a little over the top, but that's just what I do. You can off course go as wild and sparkly as you want. Or you can tone it down a notch... But let's be honest who want's that?
On the picture below you can see the finished result up close. And if you click on the arrow you wil see the result in the dark. Look at how that Glow in the Dark paint really GLOWS. The sight off it just makes me so happy.
